"Watusi"
WATUSI is the hot, tropikal "World
Beat / Reggae" band from
Texas.
A seed from Jamaica, planted
in Dallas in 1982, has grown and
spread this band and their unique
blend of roots reggae and worldbeat
music across America, from the
Caribbean to Hawaii to Afrika
and around the world!
Charter members of Reggae Ambassadors
Worldwide (R.A.W.) and one of
the premier and most established
REGGAE bands in America, they
are world musicians coming from
the Caribbean, U.S.A. and Africa.
They join cultures, life and
music together in a true Rasta
spirit of international unity,
with a "One World" message
and rhythm-World Beat!
2004 celebrated 22 years of WATUSI
and the release of their latest
CD, "Cool Runner", on
World Beatnik Records, has taken
the band and their music worldwide.
The CD is the 5th release by WATUSI
and shows a diversity of styles:
REGGAE-Roots to Dancehall, Soca,
Zouk, Afrikan JuJu, Highlife,
Soukous & Jawaiian, all mixed
in a World Beat riddim and a One
Love vibe.
"Cool Runner" was
chosen as one of the "Top
Ten Reggae CD's of 1998"
and has airplay worldwide in over
100 countries so far.
The reviews and response have
been outstanding! After touring
with the Bob Marley Festival Tour
& other top Reggae Festivals,
WATUSI made a special Spring Break
tour thru the Caribbean promoting
the new CD to a great, international
response!
WATUSI are winners of numerous
Dallas Music Awards for Reggae
and are the first call "island"
band in Texas.
WATUSI has been featured on national
and international tours, festivals,
TV, satellite, cable, radio and
in the top Reggae/ World Beat
publications around the world.
The "Skankin Horns"
and steel pans puts the total
number of players at 10 and it's
a world class jam!
"In The Reggae Spotlight"
is pleased to profile
"Watusi"
From Dallas comes 'Cool Runner'
the latest outing of Watusi, released
on the World Beatnik Records imprint.
The band members originate from
a variety of countries, and all
these influences can be heard
on the album. Next to roots reggae
tracks (Somebody, Cool Runner,
One world generation, Steppin
outta time), the album contains
dancehall reggae (Big up, Will
it go round in circles ?, Watu
Man), lovers rock (Irie love),
Hi-Life and African Ju-Ju (Majomno,
Living End) and even Zouk (What
you see, Zouk me up).
The variety of styles found on
'Cool Runner' is a plus point.
On most tracks the horns and keyboards
prevail, thus adding strength
and power to the tracks. The larger
part of the tracks invite you
to dance, while 'Children of the
Rainbow' (complete with a very
nice sax solo) is more reflective.
"Cool Runner' is a postive
album, full of energy and very
danceable, so "feel the vibrations
and dance !"
