"Selassie I Power"

New Roots Rock Reggae phenomenon Selassie I Power is more than a band; it’s a vision, a family and an All-Star Team. The group grew out of DJ and poet Kwabena Reuben’s Selassie I Power Sound System, a play on the many “Hi Power” systems on the Toronto
club scene in the early 90s. A powerful singer and prolific songwriter, Kwabena Reuben enlisted Sister Julie’s harmonies together with his own brothers Fredlocks Asher on keys and Uncle Dropsi on bass. In 1998, their CD King of Kings won the Canadian Urban Music Award for Best Reggae Album. Reuben, an ardent hockey fan, knows that a winning team is made of star players. Fredlocks Asher is a producer and DanceHall artist with one album already under his belt, Uncle Dropsi brings the Hip Hop vibe to the mic while putting the final touches on his first release, and Sister Julie’s 13-song debut is in the works. Selassie I Power puts on a full festival-style show with all these performers in the spotlight. Kwabena Reuben is known for his astonishing live energy – he trains for performance with cross-country running and four hours of dancing daily – but neither is he one to neglect the recording studio. A double album, Reggae Planet, will be released this year.
